Basic Poker Terms
Poker has its own language and these terms must be understood in order to play the game to the best of your ability. Here we shall look at the most basic poker terms.
1. The bet is the initial amount of money that you wish to wager in a poker game.
2. The flop is the three community cards dealt in Texas Holdem or Omaha poker.
3. The ante is a mandatory bet paid equally by all players prior to hand being dealt.
4. The draw is a hand requiring additional cards in order to become a made hand.
5. The call is where you match the opponents bet who has already betted.
6. The board is the five community cards found in Texas Holdem and Omaha. The flop, river and turn make up the board and any player can use them to make their best five cards.
7. The bluff is where you bet with a no made hand or a weaker hand that you pretend is a strong hand.
8. A tournament is poker competitions in which blinds and antes increase over time and a player pays a set buy in to enter.
9. The check is where you bet nothing and remain in the hand.
10. A satellite is a minor tournament that awards a seat in a major tournament.
11. The river is the last card dealt in Texas Holdem and Omaha.
12. Pot odds are the ratio of the amount of money in the pot to the amount of money needed to call a bet.
13. A freeroll can be a tournament where there is no monitory entry fee or a hand in which a player is guaranteed to at least split the pot, but still has a chance to get the entire pot.
14. Fish is an unskilled player.
15. The variance is the statistical distribution of results over a period of time and the fluctuations in the bankroll or cash flow.
These are basic poker terms that you will hear.
